Our in-store blogger Maria Hoyle describes her journey to find present inspiration for men who have everything…
“Father’s day is looming and I don’t know about you, but I haven’t got a clue what to get, so I am off downstairs to look around the store for some inspiration…
My first port of call will be menswear. My husband is known for his fancy shirts and we have some lovely ones in at the moment. Maddox Street have some great paisley print shirts; they’re a limited edition so you are less likely to find somebody else wearing the same shirt at party or barbecue! They also do floral shirts in various colours and the best thing is, there is a sale on Maddox Street and Gabicci shirts! If patterned shirts aren’t his thing Ben Green have some lovely short sleeved check shirts, ready for his holidays.
Talking about holidays, how about a t-shirt? Old Guys rule have t-shirts with bikes (handy for the upcoming Tour de France) or other patterns on the front; and shorts? French Connection is stocking a blue and white check tailored short and a selection of other colours. Menswear is also stocking leather wallets, cufflinks, ties, socks and hats and at the moment you can buy three items for the price of two – bargain!
Well I’ve got some great ideas from menswear and whilst I was there I saw a flyer for Clinique – if you purchase two or more Clinique For Men products you will receive a free six piece grooming set with washbag!
Clinique have rebranded their men’s skincare giving it a new look and new name. Clinique’s commitment is still there, which is to him what his skin needs to look its best and healthiest every day. So off I went down to the Cosmetics department and wow! There are some excellent ideas for Father’s day.
Clarins have a Father’s day offer where you can purchase a smart wash bag consisting of 125ml exfoliating cleanser, 50ml super moisture balm, 50ml smooth shave and 30ml shampoo and shower gel together worth over £50 for just £35!
I bet you are wondering why would I buy men’s products when he can just use mine?
Well (here comes the science) men’s skin is different due to the male hormone testosterone. Their skin has more abundant facial hair, is oilier, but more resilient, thicker and firmer and that is why cosmetics companies such as Clarins use plant extracts that soothe razor burn which are non-oily and strengthen and energise the skin.
If you don’t think your men will go for skin care then how about grooming products? Molton Brown have essential men’s shaving, hair, body, sport and skin care products. Why not indulge his senses with their black peppercorn collection, you could describe it as heated sand, a spice-spiked breeze and skin warmed by the sun. Their bestselling shower gel and exfoliating soap bar (with black peppercorns to polish) make the ideal gifts for deeply cleansed and warmly scented skin.
Or perhaps a sports bag essential – the 4-in-1 sports wash for body, face, hair and shave. It’s ideal for the man on the go, it’s a cleansing powerhouse. Top to toe men’s grooming is sorted in one refreshing hit!
Now I know that my husband likes to smell good and some of the fragrances for men that are on offer smell divine. If you are looking for a rich deep woody scent then try Creed Royal Oud, a dream perfume from the pages of the Arabian Nights. It’s a scent which dazzles all the senses with its evocation of the rosy Persian dawn, it’s a unisex scent so you can wear it too – bonus! Or Aventus which is the perfect fragrance for the man of action: bold, spirited and confident, and even though you may think it’s in the higher price bracket the scent lasts for ages mmm mmm mmm. Chanel Bleu, Bulgari Pour Homme, Narcisso Rodriquez, Valentino Uomo, Jean Paul Gaultier, Issey Miyake (a refreshing, citrus/woody scent) and the classic Mont Blanc legend are but a few of the other wonderful fragrances we have in stock (look out on facebook and the website for our write up on the different fragrances in store on the run up to Father’s day).
Well, I have got some brilliant gift ideas not just from me but from the children, so this isn’t as bad as I first thought, although my Dad seems to have everything and doesn’t seem to use things up as much as I would like him to! I could do with getting him something a little different maybe something to do with a hobby or some sort of toy… right, I am off to the gift department see what they have in there.
CARDS! Nearly forgot Father’s day cards, thank goodness they have plenty to choose from.
So if Dad is a fisherman, golfing or cricket fanatic I have seen some wine bottle holders that are ideal and a bit of fun. There are all sorts of gift ideas from mugs, glasses, hip flasks, bar sets, games, books and grooming sets….
What was that? Gadgets? Of course! the ultimate ‘dadget’ as Pete called it the other day, a Nespresso coffee machine – brilliant!
Not only does it mean he will be happy to make his own espresso, but he will also receive a £40 gift card when he joins the Nespresso club. With its advanced technology, clever and easy-to-use functions, every detail has been carefully considered to provide the ultimate coffee experience… ooh that sounds good he can use his gift card to purchase a variety of coffee capsules – sorted. Bread making machines seem to attract the male species, another dadget they seem to be happy to play with and again it’s simple to use. Our ladies in the cookshop will be only too happy to help you with any questions.
Well, it looks like I haven’t got any excuse for not knowing what to buy. There’s certainly plenty to choose from in store from clothing, to skincare to fragrances to ‘toys’! I hope you’ve been inspired with these suggestions and it doesn’t have to be just for Father’s day. Look out for the promotions that we will be having in store for the next two weeks, and until the next time,
Newsflash! Just arrived in store – Moonshine brewing kits, just add water to make 25 pints of real ale!
