Disability Support Calderdale – April’s Charity of the Month

This month we’re supporting Disability Support Calderdale. Here are a few words about the charity

Press release from Disability Support Calderdale

Disability Support Calderdale is a local group run by and for people with physical disabilities and long term health medical conditions who live in Calderdale.

We aim to provide information, advocacy and support to help empower and enable people to make informed choices. We are a district wide organisation and receive requests for information and support from all over the Calderdale district aiming to improve health and wellbeing and access to welfare rights.

We offer a ‘person centred’ approach and encourage the people we are supporting to make an informed choice about an issue that may affect their future. This is done by obtaining information regarding an issue and then we work and support the person by examining the various options that might be available to them.

We will arrange an appointment to meet with our service users at a venue that suits their needs; we can also provide home visits for people with a health or mobility issue who may struggle to access external venues.

On occasions we will attend meetings with other organisations along with the service-user we are supporting with their permission so that they don’t feel that they are on their own with an issue. We support the social model of disability helping people to remove barriers, become more independent and equal in society leading to social inclusion.

The services we provide include:

  • Completing benefit forms,
  • Housing issues
  • Accessing services
  • Appealing benefit decisions
  • Advocacy, information and signposting.

‘According to the 2011 Census, the following wards have a higher than average % of people living with a ‘limiting long term illness or disability’: Todmorden, Rastrick, Town, Illingworth, Sowerby Bridge, Park (Public Health England (PHE), 2015);

Disability Support Calderdale also run drop in sessions in different areas to enable people to access services and provide support regarding disability and long term health conditions also support with hate crime and we offer an accessible fitness project for people with disabilities

Our aim for the future is to target the above areas with high percentages of people living with disabilities, long term health conditions and living in deprivation.
