Disability Support Calderdale - June's Charity Of The Month

This month we're supporting Disability Support Calderdale. Look out for collection boxes on our tills.

Here are some words from the organisation about the work they do.

Disability Support Calderdale is a local group run by and for people with physical
disabilities and long-term health conditions who live in Calderdale. We aim to provide
information, advocacy and support to help empower and enable people to make
informed choices. We are a district wide organisation and receive requests for
information and support from all over the Calderdale district aiming to improve health
and wellbeing and access to welfare rights.

We offer a ‘person centred’ approach and encourage the people we are supporting
to make an informed choice about an issue that may affect their future. This is done
by obtaining information regarding an issue and then we work and support the
person by examining the various options that might be available to them.
We will arrange an appointment to meet with our service users at our office which is
fully accessible for those that may have access issues; we can also provide home
visits for people with a severe health or mobility issue who may struggle to access
external venues. We support the social model of disability helping people to remove
barriers, become more independent and equal in society leading to social inclusion.
We work in partnership with other organisations and receive referrals from the NHS,
Social Services, Overgate, Alzheimer’s Society, Lead the Way and self-referrals.

The services we provide include:
Completing benefit forms, housing issues, accessing services, appealing benefit
decisions at tribunals, advocacy, information and signposting.
Our aim for the future is to continue to work in the above areas with high
percentages of vulnerable people living with disabilities, long term health conditions
and living in deprivation and to offer drop in meetings in areas where we have not
previously done so.

We also run drop in sessions in different areas such as Todmorden Health Centre,
Mytholmroyd and Cornholme Old Library, to enable people to access services and
provide support regarding disability and long-term health conditions and we also
support people with hate crime and we offer an accessible fitness project in
Todmorden for people with disabilities.

These sessions run every Monday morning (excluding bank holidays). We also run
an exercise class every Thursday afternoon for residents at Willow Court at Elland,
and this has really taken off since running our pilot sessions in 2017. We also offer
an art class for people with disabilities at the Fielden Centre, Todmorden, every
Wednesday, 2-4pm.

We also recruit volunteers, and this is now becoming an important part of our

We now receive more donations for our work and our service is delivered in a
person-centred approach under a social enterprise ethos and we think that this is
where our future is.

I cannot believe the service I have had from Harveys today. I ordered a set of Benefit makeup at 8am for my niece for Christmas and could not believe that Tracy delivered it at 5pm. The most fantastic example of ordering locally, we must all use our local services and support them. I was amazed at the prompt personal level of delivery. Well done Harvevs.
